Departmental Summary

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOGNOSY & PHYTOCHEMISTRY

Pharmacognosy deals with medicines derived from natural sources and it involves the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of molecules of natural origin, obtained from plants, animals, minerals and marine sources so as to ascertain their potential as lead drug molecules.
1. To investigate natural resources for biological applications.
2. To emphasize on the morphological and microscopical distinctions between two closely related plant species.
3. To develop new herbal formulations and cosmetics.
4. To standardize herbal extracts and herbal formulations.
5. To carry out reverse Pharmacognosy of Traditional Indian Medicines.
6. To develop medicinal plant garden, catering to the needs of students.
7. To carry out preliminary Phytochemical & Pharmacological investigation of medicinal plants.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY

This Department provides with the facilities for the identification, purification, synthesis and standardization of Pharmaceuticals. The laboratories of this Department are well equipped with hot air ovens, magnetic stirrers with hot plate, refractometers, polarimeters, pH meters, muffle furnace, electronic balances, MP/BP apparatus, colorimeters etc.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLGY AND TOXICOLOGY

Pharmacology is the study of drugs. It involves examining the interactions of chemical substances with living systems, with a view to understanding the properties of drugs and their actions, including the interactions between drug molecules and drug receptors and how these interactions elicit an effect.
Pharmacology provides with the scientific basis and principles for a variety of special applications, such as the study of drug actions in the health sciences, the use of drugs as therapeutic agents in medicine or as tools in scientific research, and development and regulation of Pharmaceuticals. Pharmacology is a multi-disciplinary science with many subspecialties including clinical pharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, behavioral pharmacology, neuropsycho pharmacology, pharmacogenetics, and pharmacoeconomics; to name a few. Various activities of this Department are -
1. Screening of medicinal plants& synthetic drugs for Pharmacological actions.
2. Study of toxicity profile of various herbal and synthetic formulations.
In this direction, the department's aim is to train student for productive and successful careers in Pharmaceutical industry, Academia, Research and public sectors.
A multi compartment animal house is well furnished and designed to provide appropriate capabilities of housing for experimentation through weaning. It is built as per CPCSEA guidelines for housing small laboratory animals such as rats, mice, guinea pigs etc. for routine practicals and Pharmacological experimentation.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICS

Pharmaceutics is concerned with the design and development of suitable dosage forms for a drug and strategies to deliver the drug to the desired site of action in the body. The state of the art design of stable, safe and effective pharmaceutical drug formulations including modern nanoformulations involves several unique strategies to blend the drug into a suitable pharmaceutical matrix comprising of polymer(s) and recipients together which on administration to patients delivers the drug into biological matrix. The Pharmaceutics specialization of the department provides practical and research training to the students in the areas of drug formulation, drug delivery system and preparation of various types of dosage forms etc. It also give the formulation aspects related to novel drug delivery system likes SRDDS, GRDDS, TDDS etc.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICAL ANALYSIS

This Department deals with quality control and quality assurance of various drugs in raw material stage and formulations and finished products by various techniques such as from simple titrimetry to more sophisticated advanced instrumental techniques. The Department has central instrumental analysis laboratory with instruments like pH meters, conductivity meter, nephelometer&turbidometer, potentiometer, flame photometer, flourimeter, viscometer, electrophoresis apparatus, UV spectrophotometer, HPLC etc.
